In customary blood donation, a unit of entire blood is taken from a donor and delivers to a laboratory, where it is segregated into its four parts – red blood cells, white blood cells, platelets and plasma. The components are preserved and, relying on the medical requirement, offered to patients after surgery, an accident, illness, or going through chemotherapy. Apheresis divides the blood into these components while the donor is still linked up to the separation device. A revolving centrifuge or a revolving belt divides the donor’s entire blood into its parts based on density.
